Dictionary Project Kansas City was founded in 2002 with the premise of helping children learn "success," "respect," and "teamwork." Their goal is to provide each and every third grader in the 5 county metropolitan area with a new dictionary to call their own. They know that a dictionary is a child's first reference tool and they are hoping it will set them on the path to being lifelong learners.
It is my pleasure to support Dictionary Project KC. In November of 2006, I handed out new dictionaries to all of the third graders at Blue River Elementary. We learned what dictionaries are used for and we looked up a few words together. They were encouraged to make a mark next to the word in the margin so they can pace themselves and set some goals to look up so many words by a certain date. You, as parents, can help them with their goals.
They were also asked to write their names on the label inside the front cover in case their dictionary gets lost or misplaced.
These books were written with third graders in mind. I hope you and your third grader learn lots of new words together!
